就《雍正王朝》中所描述的，李卫是雍正在潜邸时的奴才，都曾是雍正的心腹，而且年羹尧外放重用时，雍正并不放心，设计将李卫放在年羹尧身边，实则是监视。

多年相处，又都是雍正的心腹，李卫和年羹尧有朋友之谊。

当时满朝文武都对年羹尧恨之入骨，如果派其他官员去赐死年羹尧，很可能会对年羹尧进行羞辱。让李卫给年羹尧送终，也算是给了年羹尧最后的体面。

其二，给李卫杀鸡儆猴。

从雍正潜邸走出来担当大任的人，除了年羹尧，就是李卫。如今，年羹尧膨胀后不断作死，最后落得个身死的下场。

雍正特意派遣李卫去赐死年羹尧，也是对李卫的警示，杀鸡儆猴，告诫李卫，年羹尧就算成了节制四省的大将军，只要雍正一句话，也是身死的下场。

其三，防止年羹尧临死做出对雍正不利的事情。

如果年羹尧临死前，出于怨恨和报复，将雍正的一些见不得人的秘密公之于众，雍正的名誉必然受损，这是雍正不想看到的。

雍正派李卫来赐死年羹尧，年羹尧就算有什么牢骚和遗言，别人也不会知道，李卫毕竟是雍正的心腹，荣辱与共，不会讲不利于雍正的事到处传播。

出于各种原因，派李卫去赐死年羹尧，可以达到多种目的。
